Rainforest Alliance
The Rainforest Alliance is a leading international conservation organization. Our mission is to protect ecosystems and the people and wildlife that live within them by implementing better business practices for biodiversity conservation and sustainability. Companies, cooperatives, and landowners that participate in our programs meet rigorous standards for protecting the environment, wildlife, workers, and local communities. The Rainforest Alliance boasts more than 17,000 supporters, with an annual budget of nearly $9 million (2002). The Rainforest Alliance runs the Adopt-a-Rainforest Program, Sustainable Agriculture Network, and the SmartWood and SmartVoyager programs.
The International Ecotourism Society (TIES)
Founded in 1990, TIES is the largest and oldest ecotourism organization in the world dedicated to generating and disseminating information about ecotourism. The organization's membership includes academics, consultants, conservation professionals and organizations, governments, architects, tour operators, lodge owners and managers, general development experts, and ecotourists in more than 80 countries. As a non-governmental organization, TIES is unique in its efforts to provide guidelines and standards, training, technical assistance, research and publications to foster sound ecotourism development.
United Nations Environment Programme
The United Nations Enviroment Programme is an international organization headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Charged by the United Nations with focusing on the enviroment and creating programs to protect it in the future, the United Nations funds studies and programs across the world on a variety of subjects. UNEP focuses on a breadth of issues: Enviromental Assessment, Biodiversity, Governance & Law, the Atmosphere and Civil Society Issues among others.
Mafisa
Mafisa offers a range of services in conservation, development, tourism and land reform. The company's mission is to facilitate economic growth, skills development and job-creation through responsible forms of tourism and related land uses. The company has a strategic alliance with Robford Tourism and a network of associates including economists, ecologists, sociologists, geographers, architects, accountants, development facilitators, journalists, film producers, dramatists and historians. Teams of experts tailored to the particular needs of each client are assembled. Emphasis is on active participation with the private sector, government and civil society in the planning and implementation of tourism and development projects.
INCAE
INCAE is a private, non-profit, multinational, higher-education organization devoted to teaching and research endeavors in the fields of business and economics aimed at training and instructing, from a worldwide perspective, individuals capable of successfully holding top management positions in Latin America. In 1964, the business community and the governments of the Central American nations founded INCAE as an initiative. Since its inception it has had the technical supervision of the Harvard Business School. INCAE is presently focused on three key activities:
- Masters programs in areas critical for Latin American development.
- Executive training programs and seminars.
- Research projects on competitiveness in the region.
INCAE has an applied approach combining the best practice and the world frontier of knowledge with the realities in Latin America.
Center for Ecotourism and Sustainable Livelihoods
Inaguarated in 2003, the CESL is located at the base of the Himalayas in Uttaranchal, India. The CESL is engaged in capacity building, policy research, documentation, bringing out publications, raising awareness and providing support to communities. CESL has conducted twenty 5-day study tours on Community Based Tourism for 300 villagers from two dozen villages, as well as specialized training courses and workshops for people from within and outside the province.During January 2005 a 3-day Workshop on Community Based Tourism in Himalayas brought together over 120 CBT practitioners from Himalayan States and international organizations. The Center has offered three short-term internships for trainees from National Institutes. Major expansion in training programme is proposed in the near future.
